  • FEBRUARY 12th

Lincoln's Birthday is, observed on the anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth on February 12, 1809. Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States, serving from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. Lincoln led the United States through our Civil War—our bloodiest war and greatest moral, constitutional, and political crisis. In doing so, he preserved the Union, abolished slavery, strengthened the federal government, and modernized the economy. New Jersey formerly observed the holiday, but on September 29, 2008  eliminated Lincoln's Birthday as a public holiday.

In other states, a celebration of Lincoln's birthday is combined with a celebration of Washington's Birthday or as part of Presidents' Day.   in honour of George Washington, born on February 22. George Washington was the first President of the United States (1789–97), the Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. He presided over the convention that drafted the current United States Constitution and during his lifetime was called the "father of his country". Presidents’ Day is a federal holiday observed on the third Monday of February and is popularly recognized as honouring also Abraham Lincoln and sometimes all the U.S. presidents.
