Medication Administration Policy

  • During the school year, your child may require medication while school is in session.  According to the medication policy, "medication" means any prescription drug and over-the-counter medicine.  This includes such medications as Tylenol, cough drops, and medicated ointments.

The following guidelines MUST be followed when the administration of medication is necessary (Roxbury School District Policy No. 5330):

    1)  The parent/guardian AND the private physician must provide written request for the administration of the medication at school.  The physician's written order must include:
-Diagnosis or type of condition involved
    -Name of medication
    -Time of administration & discontinuation
    -Side Effects
    2)  Medication must be brought to the Health Office by the parent/guardian.  Students are not permitted to carry medications to or from school in their backpacks.

    3)  Medication must be in original, labeled container (most pharmacies will provide you with an extra bottle properly labeled for school).

    4)  Medication orders must be renewed at the beginning of the school year and unused medication picked up by parent/guardian at the end of the school year.

    5)  The school nurse or parent/guardian are the only persons permitted to administer medication in the school.

    6)  Medication permission slips may be obtained from the school nurse OR can be found on the Nixon Website under the Resources tab in the "Forms" section.
